Laparotomy is an open operation on the abdomen. This is normally done through an up & down or bikini line cut. This type of operation is carried out for procedures such as an abdominal hysterectomy, myomectomy (removal of fibroids) and ovarian cystectomy (removal of ovarian cysts).

Hospital stay following a laparotomy is normally about 3-4 days with most people being off work for a minimum of 6 weeks after discharge from hospital..
